Why Unclaimed Benefits End Up in the FSCA Register
Over R42 billion in unclaimed benefits is currently held across South Africa’s registered pension and provident funds. When a fund member leaves an employer without claiming their benefit — or when the fund cannot locate them after reasonable attempts — the benefit is classified as unclaimed and reported to the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA). The money is preserved in full, indefinitely, and is accessible to the rightful owner at any time through the free Unclaimed Benefits Register at unclaimedbenefit.co.za.
Who Is Most Likely to Have Benefits Waiting
Anyone who has ever changed employers, emigrated, changed their name, or worked for a company that has since closed could have unclaimed benefits. Deceased estates are also a major source — executors and legal heirs can search and claim on behalf of a deceased member using the same free register. Benefits registered under a maiden name before a marriage are frequently overlooked and worth searching separately.
